french actor and mime known for his creation Bip, the clown, a slightly crazed, unpre-dictable but lovable character. born into a jewish family, life was difficult. his father was died in concentration camp. marceau was active in the french resistance; in order to keep children safe in hiding, he developed miming skills to distract them. he studied with the etienne decroux, worked with jean-louis barrault, and became the adept international mime he's remembered for. 1923-2007 paris. age 84.
