1902-1967, age 65 of cancer, born joplin missouri. lanston was an american poet, novelist, playwright and social activist. he is best known as leader of the harlem renaissance. he promoted equality, condemned racism and injustice, and celebrated in his writings african-american culture, humor and spirituality. his last poem was ‘the painter and the lash’.
