1914-1995, age 80, born new york, new york usa. jonas was an american virologist and medical researcher who developed the first polio vaccine which was developed during a professorship in school of medicine at university of pittsburgh starting in 1948 for seven years. he was celebrated as a ‘miracle worker’. he founded the salk institute for biological studies in la jolla, california. presidential medal of freedom in 1977.
