israeli-american violinist, conductor and music pedagogue. born in 1945 in tel aviv to polish immigrants, he started violin playing at age four, and also contracted polio. he uses crutches and plays seated. he moved to the usa to study at julliard and lives here with violinist wife; they have five children. carnegie hall debut 1958, and since performs internationally with many orchestras. he is principal guest conductor with detroit symphony and music advisor to saint louis symphony, and recently the westchester philharmonic.
the perlman music program, founded by his wife toby in 1995, is a vital part of their life.
