soviet-born dancer of ballet and modern dance, one of the most celebrated of the 20th century. he was a soloist with the kirov ballet which toured europe when he defected to the west in 1961. he danced with the royal ballet in england and then the paris opera ballet, where he was made director 1983. austrian citizenship 1982. 1938-1992. died of aids.
