arnold schoenberg - portrait


austrian composer and painter, associated with the expressionist movement in german poetry and art, and leader of the second viennese school. during the rise of the nazi party, his music was labeled degenerate. he immigrated to america in 1934. he is particularly associated with developing the twelve-tone technique of the chromatic scale. he was born into a jewish family, converted to christianity, and reaffirmed his judaism 1933.1874-1951.
