eric kandel - large portrait
an austrian-born american neuropsychiatrist and recipient of nobel prize in physiology for the physiological basis of memory storage in neurons. he was brought up in judaic studies and attended yeshiva of flatbush brooklyn. freud's emphasis on unconscious neural processes motivated kandel's interest in the biology of memory.
