a british-american neurologist, writer and amateur chemist. professor at new york university school of medicine, and the author of numerous best-selling books. born into a london jewish family of three other children in 1933, his father a physician, he learned early enthusiasm for medicine. since 1965, he has lived in new york, serving as instructor and professor at albert einstein college of medicine, columbia university medical center and other institutions. he describes himself as celibate, never marrying. swims daily. age 80.
