an american playwright, whose work included a series of ten plays on afro-american subjects named 'the pittsburgh cycle, for which he received two pulitzer prizes for drama. he was born in 1945 to a racially mixed family but raised by his mother. died in 2005 of liver cancer in seattle; his pittsburgh pennsylvania home was declared a historic landmark.
