british comic actor, filmmaker and director; his worldwide known icon is 'the tramp'. his 75 year career in the film industry was mostly in the silent era. his mother was committed to a mental asylum and his father mostly absent, he spent much of his youth in the workhouse.
born in 1889, he was, by 1918, of the most famous men in the world. he co-founded united artists distribution company and had total control over his dozen films. death 1977, age 88.
