american trumpeter, composer, teacher, music educator and artistic director of jazz at lincoln center. born in new orleans into a musical family, and naturally gifted, he was the youngest student admitted to bershire music center, and to the julliard school in 1979.
he has won nine grammy awards and the first jazz musician to win the pulitzer prize 1997.
