american author and poet, born in st louis missouri 1928. her writing is forged out of the unjust institutional restrictions on education, professions and politics of afro-americans. she has written seven autobiographies including 'caged bird' 1969 and 'mom & me & mom' 2010. obama awarded her the president's medal of freedom 2013 at age 85.
