"Jan, veteran author, filmmaker, artist and journal writer, introduces you in this innovative digital media to his confession cinema. Jan has spent fifty years processing his personal journey through a sometimes chaotic life, writing and speaking his journals to gain psychical insight and personal development.

His video & audio journals are fascinating explorations of complex emotional issues in real life relationships of career, family and romance. You will find viewing, hearing and reading these journals an intriguing experience. They can be valuable tools toward self-discovery and self-acceptance." -  Thomas DeMann

this is confessional cinema – a video story constructed from an associative flow of thoughts & feelings through several personal subject matters. this is an audio-visual format of the textJournals that i have previously been writing for fifty years.

from my long form videoJournals i take three or four best expressed & relevant subjects, title them, and blend these contrasting elements into a short intense film beginning with my 1 min life-history sequence, ending with a dramatic climax.

now, instead of writing, i stand in front of camera, with lights, green screen behind me, mikes clipped to my shirt, and speak spontaneously for 45 minutes, two or three times each month. i edit these elements into my monthly videoJournal.

they are legitimately what directs our conduct in the world."                                                                                                                                Sigmund Freud

jan gero’s  the compulsive new yorker is an innovative form of digital video art that expresses both raw and cultured feelings – they are compelling reflections of the human condition in audio journal and video journal formats, confession cinema.
jan is often capable of deconstructing his troubled life to reveal a truthful grasp of inner and outer reality. with intellectual rigor, he demands transparency of his motive and his action, an often a frustrating challenge.  his inward focused scrutiny can serve as a guide for what inner voices to listen to, for when these secret voices might best be accessed, and perhaps how to deal with them, once emerging.  some of the questions he attempts to answer are: where is the animal in me?  how can i coexist with another person?  how can i live knowing that the end of life is total extinction of my consciousness?
